Since the implementation of the interim NIL policy in July 2021, various viewpoints have emerged within the NIL landscape, eliciting diverse opinions. Coaches, who wield considerable influence in college sports, have contributed significantly to this discourse. Their privileged position as decision-makers in team composition and shaping team culture, along with their substantial earnings, has lent considerable weight to their perspectives on NIL.

Controversial statements pertaining to NIL have predominantly originated from football coaches, including Eliah Drinkwitz of Missouri, Nick Saban of Alabama, and former coach Urban Meyer. On May 30, Drinkwitz expressed his critique by remarking, "College players, through NIL, are making more money than my brother-in-law, who is a pediatrician. He saves lives." Drinkwitz's comment implies his dissatisfaction with the current state of NIL, suggesting that college football players are earning more than a profession that he believes has a greater societal impact. These remarks surprised many within the college football and sports community, as it would be expected that a coach of Drinkwitz's stature, who earns millions of dollars, would support his players' financial gains through NIL deals.

On June 1, Urban Meyer expressed his view to sports commentator Dan Dakich, characterizing NIL collectives as a form of "cheating" and contending that player recruitment would become centered around schools with the most financial resources. Essentially, Meyer argues that college football will become inherently unfair due to such recruiting practices, resulting in imbalanced team compositions across the sport. In 2022, Nick Saban criticized Texas A&M Football, accusing them of "buying every player" in their 2022 recruiting class, unlike Alabama, which he believes did not engage in such practices. Saban's stance is clear: he opposes student-athletes capitalizing on their NIL opportunities to a certain extent, believing it to be detrimental to the integrity of college football. Additional coaches, including former Syracuse Basketball Head Coach Jim Boeheim and Stanford Women's Basketball Coach Tara VanDerveer, have also criticized NIL, viewing it as inequitable and regressive for college sports.

However, it is worth noting that many coaches across various college sports have supported NIL deals and collectives for student-athletes. Figures such as Kentucky Basketball Coach John Calipari, Iowa Football Coach Kirk Ferentz, and Ohio State Basketball Coach Chris Holtmann have publicly expressed their backing for NIL, both online and through in-person events supporting these arrangements.

While NIL has faced significant criticism from coaches, it has also garnered substantial support from coaches nationwide. The critical remarks have surprised many, as one would expect coaches to be pleased with their players' ability to earn substantial sums of money through NIL. The advantages and disadvantages of NIL have been apparent since its inception in July 2021. The NIL policy continues to evolve across the United States and individual states, as it is perceived as an ongoing work in progress. As significant changes to the NIL policy may be on the horizon, further controversial comments may emerge along the way, given that NIL remains one of the most debated topics not only in college sports but also in the broader sports landscape.
