Florida NIL Amendment to Give Schools More Power
May 10, 2023On February 12th, 2023, it was announced that the state of Florida is likely to pass an NIL Amendment to give schools more power in facilitating deals.
What will this amendment do? The main change brought about will be the removal of so-called cause compensation language which will allow for schools to more directly facilitate deals. Previously, schools were not allowed to be seen causing cash to be directed to athletes.
Certain figures in Florida felt that the law was not truly necessary. For example, Florida football coach Billy Napier told reporters he didn’t see the law as much of a problem. Although many do not truly believe that the law was needed, the amended law also has provisions for adding entrepreneurship education about what financial literacy services schools can provide their athletes, and they can coordinate those programs with collectives.
Overall, this amendment opens the door for more communication, and levels the playing field by comparison to other states — where school officials could talk freely about opportunities to prospects or current athletes.
The repeal of the Florida NIL law is just the latest development in a rapidly evolving landscape surrounding the rights of college athletes. As more states consider their own NIL laws, it remains to be seen what the future will hold for the world of college sports. One thing is certain, however: the debate surrounding NIL rights is far from over and constantly changing the game. Will more states follow?
